Streams of Light aims to transform the dark and desolate under-viaduct space into a warm and inviting environment. To achieve this, we explored innovative ways to introduce natural daylight into the area. We discovered unused green spaces atop the viaduct, separate from the vehicular roads, where we propose installing skylights.
With natural light streaming in, we saw an opportunity to incorporate elements of nature – such as trees, plants, and flowing water – to encourage biodiversity. Light streaming through the slits casts shadows that resemble train tracks across the site at different times of the day.
The viaduct now serves not just as a shelter but also as a conduit for daylight, illuminating the space and enabling new leisure and social activities underneath it. At the same time, it connects back to the site’s history – as a former KTM railway route and the once-swampy surroundings known as Boh Beh Kang, which translates to “stream with no tail” or “stream without an end.”
